A buyer’s guide to Pedestal Table Bases

By Hill Cross Furniture

The benefits of pedestal table bases over four legged table bases

1.More streamlined, less cluttered look.
2.Easier for customers to sit down on seats.
3.Easier when putting tables together for larger group bookings. Meaning that customers don’t have to sit with their legs between legs of the adjoining tables.
4.Easier to clean the floor around a single pedestal table base.

Stability and size issues
Generally the important issues on stability are determined by the weight of a pedestal table base and its footprint on the floor.
Where a supplier gives a recommended table top size for a base, it is advised to never go larger than this.
If the table top is particularly heavy, for example, granite, marble or 40mm solid hardwood, it is advised to keep well inside the supplier’s guidelines for that pedestal table base.
Most pedestal table bases are available in all heights, apart from the more elaborate, traditional or ultra contemporary designs.

Metal pedestal table bases Vs. wooden pedestal table bases
Metal pedestal bases tend to be sold in greater numbers partly due to maintenance issues and partly due to cost.
On the whole a metal pedestal table base will be cheaper than wooden pedestal bases and are easier to maintain.
Wooden bases tend to be more popular in pubs, rustic restaurants and golf clubhouses, where high customer throughput occurs, people tend to choose a metal pedestal table base as it is much easier to maintain.
One issue to consider is how far you wish to push the chairs into the tables. If you need to push the chairs in as close as possible to the table for space saving purposes and ensuring a free flow of people, it is essential that the base of the pedestal will allow for this.

Indoor finishes, metal pedestal bases
The Lexis black cast iron range is a relatively inexpensive collection which tends to be the most popular for usage in restaurants, bars and canteens.
When considering price and where table tops are to be covered by cloths down to the floor, the Samson range is an ideal choice. This is an inexpensive black metal base with adjustable feet.
Chrome pedestal bases are the second most popular finish; these are very durable but need a high level of maintenance as they can get dirty easily.
Round chrome pedestal bases tend to incorporate chrome cover plates which are placed over the cast iron round base.
Stainless steel is also a popular finish for a pedestal table base. Stainless steel comes in two finishes, brushed stainless steel or polished stainless steel.
Polished stainless steel is more like chrome and is chosen when stainless steel is used elsewhere in the venue. It tends to have a more upmarket feel to it than chrome however; it is worth bearing in mind that it is also more expensive chrome.
Other metal finishes that are popular and should be considered when choosing pedestal bases are epoxy powder coated finishes. These are very durable and can turn a simple metal dining base into a very contemporary one.

The outdoor pedestal table base
It is possible to use a primer on cast iron bases so that they can be used outdoors.
Aluminium pedestal table bases tend to be the most appropriate for outdoor usage as aluminium will not rust, although it will tarnish if subject to a lot of salt water. Aluminium is also light and this helps if the tables are moved in and out everyday.

Incorporating wood into metal pedestal bases
Where a balance is needed between aesthetics and practicality, many designers specify metal base plates with wooden columns.
The wooden columns can be quite ornate and the metal base can be finished in a Hammerite brown finish which complements the wood finish. The cheapest option is to have the central column of the pedestal table base in metal with a beech wood veneer. This works very well indeed as it is very durable and this can be stained any colour.

Wooden bases
Generally the majority of wooden pedestal bases are of a traditional design. In pubs or rustic locations it is not so serious if a small amount of damage is caused. In situations like hotel bedrooms, where traffic is light, wooden pedestal bases are the preferred option.
When buying a pedestal table base consider the extent of square edges the base features as these can easily be damaged by customers feet.

Traditional Vs. Contemporary
Traditional pedestal bases can easily be made more quirky if finished in an unusual colour or used with a highly contemporary table top. The best example of this at the moment is polishing traditional bases in a high gloss black finish and co-ordinating it with a primary (red, blue, green) coloured table top.

Pedestal table base Price Guide
For the most economical and indoor pedestal bases, choose the Samson range.
If you are looking at something a bit heavier and more substantial, then use the Lexis range which is very well priced.
Chrome pedestal table bases are cheaper than stainless steel and wooden bases. Stainless steel and wooden bases are about on a par, with each other, price wise.
For outdoor pedestal bases, the most economical and lightest in weight is the Maria.

Help with maintaining your table tops!

At Hill Cross Furniture we are being asked more and more for advice on how to take care of wooden, granite, oiled and finished table tops.

The following basic advice may help you prolong the life of your table tops:

Sanitising sprays are NOT recommended – this is the mistake that most people make. Long term use of a sanitising spray will damage the lacquer.

The same applies to chlorine bleach or any polish that contains alcohol, ammonia and acids.

Furthermore, the repeated use on wooden, laminated, marble and granite tops, of a polish containing silicone is NOT recommended as it will lead to a build up of a silicone film altering the appearance of the table top.

Blot any spills immediately, wiping table tops with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry with a lint free cloth.

For granite and marble tops treat as wood, however, bear in mind that citrus juices (lemon especially) can damage the appearance of granite and marble tops. Take care to remove any citrus products as quickly as possible from the surface.

Glass table tops should be cleaned using a non-solvent based glass cleaner and soft cloth, carefully avoiding contact with any wooden or painted sections of the furniture.

If your table tops have an oiled finish, then your need to apply a coat of generic Danish oil every month to maintain the finish. Danish oil is available from all good DIY store.

Avoid dragging objects on the surface as well as avoiding placing items direct from the oven onto the surface. Protect your table tops by using protective heat resistant mats.

Never use sharp objects such as knives directly on to the surfaces. Use a chopping block or cutting board.

It is worth bearing in mind that the manufacturer cannot be held responsible if these guidelines are not adhered to.

Interactive Banquette Seating section is a huge success

Banquette Seating goes Interactive

The facility features high visual impact 3D CAD drawings for an all round pleasant and stimulating customer experience. In a virtual setting, customers can select an upholstery finish in a choice of 10 different colour options in either soft fabric or leather – there are literally hundreds of designs to choose from with the option to download the finished product for mood boards and presentations.

The UKs leading contract furniture supplier aims to ease the decision-making process when ordering banquette seating in what is thought to be a very ‘grey’ area as choices can be extremely complex with thousands of designs to choose from.

Managing Director, Jake Bailey, said: “We have invested heavily in our website and we are always developing new features to help customers, designers and specifiers make their design choices. Our whole premise is to be customer focused and to give clients as much information as possible in order to make their life easier. Banquette seating is undoubtedly one of the most complex areas within the contract furniture market and there is very limited information available to them.”

Accessibility is a unique and important aspect of Hill Cross’s services. The Hill Cross website also provides detailed information about banquette seating construction, arm and divider types as well as numerous completed banquette seating projects.

Mr Bailey continued, “We identified a gap in the market for an online banquette seating information bank as there is nothing like this out there at the moment. In conjunction, we have also developed a fully comprehensive 54-page downloadable brochure outlining additional options. All the information is in one place – it simply couldn’t get any easier.”

Over the next 12 months Hill Cross plan to add more fabrics to the visualisations.
